Aerospace

The aerospace industry needs metals that can withstand high temperatures, such as in jet engines. The metals must also be simultaneously lightweight and strong, such as for satellites to be launched into space. This industry is always updating its technology. 3D printing now plays a large role in this industry and is increasingly being used in new designs for an airplane, for example. 3D is an especially handy technology for producing hollow structures which are lightweight, but just as strong.

Aerospace applications

  • Satellite parts
  • Engine parts
  • Turbine blades, disks, and rings
  • Fasteners

Frequently used metals in this industry

  • Titanium: lightweight and strong, such as for satellites, but also for 3D prints
  • Inconel Nickel alloy: for parts that must withstand high temperatures, such as engines
