What Does a Specialist in High-Performance Metals Do? In conversation with Metel’s director Dennis Wijnants, we discuss the key factors for delivering high-performance metals to demanding markets. Metel’s experience in high-tech markets such as semiconductors, medical, and petrochemicals ensures that their entire service offering is tailored to these sectors. This article outlines how Metel makes a difference for its customers. “Consistent quality and good availability are essential as a supplier of high-performance metals. For many clients, that’s just as important as the material knowledge with which we support them,” says Dennis Wijnants. “In practice, it’s the combination of these factors that has ensured that many clients have been doing business with us for years. dennis wijnants metel

High-Performance Metals

Wijnants founded Metel in 2013 after gaining extensive experience in the metal industry, particularly in bulk metals. He recognized the growing demand for special metals and realized that a knowledgeable supplier provides significant added value. “It sounds simple; instead of choosing stainless steel 304, let’s opt for an Inconel alloy that is more durable. But which alloy is best suited for the product and why? An engineer doesn’t always have that knowledge,” states Wijnants. “We know a lot about the properties of different alloys and types, understand theassociated certifications or standards, thereby assisting engineers in selecting the right metal for their applications. This support is especially beneficial for smaller organizations. For larger organizations, such as OEMs in the semiconductor or medical sectors, the situation is different. They particularly appreciate our consistent quality, documentation, and availability. Our website serves as an important resource for these clients, allowing them to download datasheets and determine the appropriate material for their prototypes. Our expertise becomes crucial when they encounter challenges.

Markets

Metel supplies companies active in a wide variety ofmarkets. A complete list is therefore impractical, but some key markets include:

  • High-tech (machinery)
  • Semiconductor
  • Medical
  • Petrochemical
  • Offshore

Components from Titanium, Tungsten, and Inconel

“Many clients lack the knowledge, technical capacity, or time required to manufacture components from these hard-to-process metals. It’s also a significant investment, as the machining of Tungsten or Inconel demands specialized tools and expertise. When the component is also relatively small (in quantities), clients often prefer to outsource this work. Our factories work exclusively with a specific group of metals and have a variety of processing techniques in-house. Therefore, it often happens that Metel supplies Titanium in sheet or bar form and a finished Tungsten product (according to the customer’s provided drawing). This way, we relieve many customers of their concerns.”
