Stellite 6B

Stellite 6B / CoCr30W5 / AMS 5894

Stellite 6B is a cobalt-chromium-molybdenum alloy composed of approximately 50–60% cobalt, 27–30% chromium, and 4–6% molybdenum. This wear-resistant alloy, also known as CoCr30W5, is engineered to maintain its hardness and performance under extreme conditions, including temperatures up to 800°C.

Thanks to its exceptional combination of wear resistance, heat resistance, and corrosion resistance, Stellite 6B is widely used in demanding industrial environments.

Properties of Stellite 6B

Stellite 6B excels with its outstanding wear resistance, stability at high temperatures, and resistance to oxidation and corrosion. The alloy retains its hardness even at temperatures up to 800°C, making it ideal for applications requiring prolonged exposure to heat and friction.

The composition—with significant amounts of chromium and tungsten—ensures a strong and stable microstructure that resists wear and deformation. The addition of carbon enhances hardness, while molybdenum contributes to overall strength and corrosion resistance.

According to AMS 5894, Stellite 6B must be supplied in a solution-hardened condition. This means the material has undergone heat treatment beforehand to ensure optimal performance. The standard not only defines the chemical composition but also the mechanical properties and delivery condition of the material, allowing it to be immediately used in demanding applications without further finishing.

Applications of Stellite 6B

Stellite 6B is widely used in the aerospace industry, where it serves for turbine components that must withstand high temperatures and wear. In the oil and gas industry, it is applied in drilling rigs, pumps, and valves that operate under heavy mechanical stress and corrosive conditions.

Additionally, Stellite 6B is extensively utilized in the steel industry for cutting tools and wear parts, due to its combination of hardness, thermal stability, and durability. Its versatility makes it a reliable alloy in sectors where performance under pressure is crucial.

Stellite 6B is the ideal choice for applications requiring extreme wear resistance, heat resistance, and structural integrity.
