Titanium Grade 5

Titanium Grade 5 / Ti6Al4V / 3.7164 / 3.7165

Titanium Grade 5, also known as Ti6Al4V, is the most widely used titanium alloy globally. This alpha-beta alloy consists of approximately 90% titanium, 6% aluminum, and 4% vanadium, providing an excellent combination of strength, lightness, and workability.

Thanks to these properties, Titanium Grade 5 is widely used in demanding sectors such as aerospace, space, and high-tech industries.

Properties of Titanium Grade 5

Titanium Grade 5 is renowned for its high strength and excellent corrosion resistance, even in aggressive environments such as saltwater and extreme temperatures up to 430 degrees Celsius. The alloy has low thermal expansion and high fatigue resistance, making it ideal for applications where structural integrity and durability are crucial.

With a strength more than four times that of Titanium Grade 1, Titanium Grade 5 offers an unparalleled strength-to-weight ratio. It typically has a tensile strength of 895 MPa, but after a Solution Treatment and Aging (STA) heat treatment, this can exceed 1200 MPa. Despite its high strength, the alloy remains highly workable and weldable, making it a popular choice across various industries.

Applications of Titanium Grade 5

Titanium Grade 5 is widely used in sectors where high strength and corrosion resistance are required. In aviation, it is used for aircraft components due to its low density and high strength. The material is also applied in subsea and offshore environments because of its excellent resistance to saltwater corrosion.

Moreover, Titanium Grade 5 is an essential material in the semiconductor industry, where it is used for components in lithography machines and vacuum systems. In aerospace, it is used for satellite components, while its high durability and precision also make it suitable for medical implants and high-performance sports equipment.

GSA 08 3040 Glow Treatment for Titanium Grade 5

To further optimize material properties, a GSA 08 3040 annealing treatment is often applied to Titanium Grade 5. This process reduces internal stresses that arise during machining or welding, enhances dimensional stability, and increases durability. As a result, the risk of cracking and deformation is minimized, which is crucial for applications where precision and reliability are of utmost importance. This treatment is widely used in the high-tech sector and is often a requirement for ASML suppliers.

In addition to the standard GSA annealing treatment, an STA (Solution Treated and Aged) treatment can also be applied, achieving the highest mechanical properties. While this increases strength, it also makes the material more challenging to machine. Many companies opt to have the material delivered directly with the STA treatment to save on costs and time. Titanium Grade 5 is the ideal choice for applications requiring a combination of high strength, corrosion resistance, and machinability.
