Titanium Grade 23 (ELI)

Titanium Grade 23 (ELI) / 3.7165 / R56401

Titanium Grade 23, also known as Ti6Al4V ELI (Extra Low Interstitial), is a refined variant of the popular Titanium alloy Grade 5 (Ti6Al4V). The difference lies in the extremely low content of interstitial elements such as oxygen, nitrogen, and carbon. This purer composition gives Titanium Grade 23 improved toughness, higher fatigue resistance, and excellent biocompatibility, without significantly reducing strength.

Thanks to these properties, Titanium Grade 23 is the worldwide standard alloy for medical implants, but it is also used in aerospace and high-tech industries where reliability and purity are essential.

Properties of Titanium Grade 23 (ELI)

Titanium Grade 23 combines high strength, low density, and excellent corrosion resistance with an exceptional level of purity. The lower amount of interstitial elements results in improved impact resistance and toughness, especially at low temperatures, while the mechanical strength remains largely comparable to Grade 5.

The alloy offers excellent biocompatibility, making it safe and effective for long-term contact with body tissue. Titanium Grade 23 is easy to weld, machinable, and compatible with various surface treatments, making it suitable for precision components with high demands on finish and strength.

Additionally, the material maintains excellent performance in aggressive environments, such as physiological fluids or salty atmospheres, making it widely applicable outside the medical sector as well.

Applications of Titanium Grade 23 (ELI)

Titanium Grade 23 is primarily used in the medical sector, including for:

  • Orthopedic implants (hip, knee, and spinal implants)
  • Dental implants and surgical instruments
  • Biomechanical components with long-term tissue contact

Additionally, Titanium Grade 23 is applied in the aerospace, space, and high-performance industries, for example in:

  • Structural aircraft parts
  • Precision components with high reliability requirements
  • Cryogenic applications due to excellent toughness at low temperatures

Titanium Grade 23 (ELI) is thus the ideal choice for applications where biocompatibility, purity, and toughness are crucial, an advanced titanium alloy excelling in performance, safety, and reliability.
