Haynes® Alloy 188 is a cobalt-based superalloy with nickel, designed for exceptional performance at high temperatures up to 1093°C. The alloy offers excellent oxidation resistance, partly due to its high chromium content and a small addition of the transitional element lanthanum, which contributes to the formation of a stable and protective oxide layer.
Haynes® 188 also offers excellent resistance to sulfur-containing atmospheres, combined with good metallurgical stability and formability, making the material versatile in its applications.
Haynes® 188 combines high mechanical strength at elevated temperatures with excellent oxidation resistance, especially in air and combustion gases up to 1093°C. The addition of lanthanum enhances the adhesion and durability of the protective oxide layer, resulting in a long lifespan during cyclic heating.
The alloy is easily weldable and formable, and exhibits high resistance to degradation by sulfur oxides, which is essential for combustion applications. Additionally, the microstructure remains stable under prolonged thermal stress, ensuring structural integrity.
Thanks to this combination of properties, Haynes® 188 is a preferred material in demanding thermal applications.
Haynes® Alloy 188 is primarily used in aerospace and energy technology, particularly in gas turbine components where high temperatures and oxidative conditions are present. Typical applications include:
Combustors
Flame Holders
Transition Ducts in gas turbines
Components in Combustion Systems and Heat Shields
Furnace and Heat-Resistant Structures in industrial installations
The combination of weldability, oxidation resistance, and high-temperature performance makes Haynes® 188 exceptionally suitable for structural applications under extreme thermal stress.
Haynes® Alloy 188 is the superalloy for reliable performance in high-temperature, chemically aggressive combustion environments.
