Zirconium Zr702

Zirconium Zr702 / UNS R60702

Zirconium Zr702 is commercially pure Zirconium and the most commonly used Zirconium grade. The material naturally contains a limited amount of Hafnium, which does not significantly affect the properties. Due to its high chemical purity, Zr702 forms the base grade within the Zirconium family.

Characteristic of Zr702 is the thin, natural oxide layer that forms as soon as the material comes into contact with oxygen. This layer protects the underlying metal and explains why Zirconium is used in aggressive chemical environments.

Properties of Zirconium Zr702

Zr702 offers high resistance to corrosion in acids, alkalis, and chloride-containing solutions, including hydrochloric acid and diluted sulfuric acid. The oxide layer self-repairs when damaged as soon as oxygen is present again.

Mechanically, Zr702 is less strong than the niobium-alloyed variants, with a minimum tensile strength of approximately 379 MPa. This is balanced by good formability and weldability. Zirconium is also nearly transparent to thermal neutrons.

Applications of Zirconium Zr702

In the chemical process industry, Zr702 is used in heat exchangers, reactor vessels, and piping exposed to aggressive acids, especially in the production of acetic acid. In the nuclear sector, the material is used for components where low neutron absorption is required.

Zirconium Zr702 is therefore the standard choice when chemical resistance outweighs mechanical strength.
