Zirconium Zr705

Zirconium Zr705 / UNS R60705

Zirconium Zr705 is a highly alloyed zirconium grade with 2 to 3 percent Niobium, making it the strongest commonly used zirconium alloy. The Niobium addition improves both tensile strength and formability.

This alloy is used when high mechanical strength must be combined with the corrosion resistance of zirconium.

Properties of Zirconium Zr705

With a minimum tensile strength of approximately 552 MPa and a yield strength of at least 379 MPa, Zr705 surpasses both Zr702 and Zr704 mechanically, while maintaining good ductility.

Zr705 typically requires a stress-relief annealing treatment after welding. The corrosion resistance is nearly equivalent to that of Zr702, although Niobium can lead to hydrogen uptake under certain conditions.

Applications of Zirconium Zr705

Due to its high strength, Zr705 is used in aerospace and for fasteners such as bolts and flanges. In the nuclear industry, it is a common material for structural components.

It is also used in the chemical process industry, especially in sulfuric acid applications, when Zr702 does not provide sufficient mechanical margin.
